"Always was a promise, how can you just break that promise?" p. 60
I would have never thought that Monica would break up with me over my eye cancer. I was upset over the break up not only because I thought that she loved me, but also because she had the nerve to try and say that she 'couldn't handle' the fact that I was losing my vision. How can she possibly think that she can't handle it, when I'm the one who's living with it? Cancer sucks.

Isaac's Importance as a Character
Throughout The Fault in Our Stars, to many people Isaac's character presence may seem insignificant to most people, but I wanted to share why I believe that Isaac's character is included in the book.
Quite often when Isaac is presented with bad news or negativity, he gets angry and shows his anger, particularly through breaking things. I think that this release of anger is important to the reader, to act as a reminder that not only is cancer sad, but its also frustrating and unfair. These feelings are important to the reader because unless the reader has experienced cancer, there's a chance that they don't understand the emotional roller coaster involved with the disease, which is why it is important Isaac gives us a reminder of the struggle of being a victim to cancer. Isaac is also a significant aspect to the book because of his insight (no pun intended). Similar to Tiresias, the blind prophet of Thebes, Isaac is often able to see the 'big picture' of things, which is strange because he has no sight. This is important to the book because it allows the characters to realize what's important and what doesn't really matter. |
Isaac and Literary Devices : Comic Relief
Throughout The Fault in Our Stars, Isaac is often portrayed with a wide sense of humor, which serves as a comic relief for the characters as well as the reader.
Isaac's comic relief is important for the characters particularly in times when their state of health takes a turn, and there is the possibility of death. Although Isaac does differentiate between appropriate and non- appropriate times for humor, he often serves as a relief to characters when things become stressful.
Isaac's comic relief is important for the reader because it allows for the reader to relax and contemplate the plot, such as the 'big picture' that Isaac may highlight. The comic relief is also important for the reader, especially when the topics in the book get 'heavy'. Isaac is essential in these times because it allows for a short break from the serious, heart wrenching truth.

Isaac and Literary Devices : Symbolism
Symbolism through Isaac's character is important, specifically when Augustus and himself play video games. This is important because since both boys are fighting cancer, it makes a connection between the real world and the stigma of cancer. I think that this is important because it provides a realization for the readers, that although their lives may be tougher than a person without cancer, they still have the same wants and desires as any other teenager, including playing video games.
