Phalanxifor
The fictitious drug, Phalanxifor, was "... a molecule designed to attach itself to cancer cells and slow their growth." p. 25.
The drug, Phalanxifor, merely prolongs and improves the quality of my life. Regardless of the amount of chemicals my body is filled with I still remain a ticking time bomb. My thyroid cancer has metastasized and is now in my lungs, and my only hope is for a crazy miracle. Although my state of health is slowly deteriorating, I am grateful for Phalanxifor, for if if wasn't for it I wouldn't still be around. I guess some of our lives are only meant to last for so long, and all I can do it be thankful for the time I've been able to spend on this Earth with Augustus Waters. |
"Some infinities are bigger than other infinities" p. 233
Through the numerous events Gus and I have recently experienced, this quote, which was originally from Peter Van Houten, has really given me a new perspective on everything of importance in my life, and even in other peoples live's. The time frame of this quote can change drastically, depending on the mindset and the view point of the person interpreting it. When Isaac an Monica promised each other forever, that could have been classified as an infinity at the time, because there was no sense of when their relationship was going to end, previous to Isaac's surgery. I've found that this same idea applies for everyone, regardless of their relationship status or what stage in life they may be at. This quote particularly applies to the relationship that Augustus and I have because although we both know that we have a limited amount of time to spend together, the value of our time spent together is enough to last us an infinity, and we both know our love could never be replaced.

"I fell in love the way you fall asleep; slowly, and then all at once."
p. 125 The most effective way to describe the love Augustus and I share is through a common experience- falling asleep. Our relationship progressed slowly, until before I knew what was happening, we were head over heels in love. The feelings between Augustus and I is equivalent to a billion supernovas exploding, and I wouldn't want it any other way. |
"'Without Pain, How Could We Know Joy?’ This is an old argument in the field of Thinking About Suffering, and its stupidity and lack of sophistication could be plumbed for centuries, but suffice it to say that the existence of broccoli does not in any way affect the taste of chocolate.”p. 35
This is something that is not often realized by a lot of people. Never does the existence of one thing depend on another, specifically when talking about personal pleasures and feelings. Does this mean that you will never completely enjoy happiness until you feel pain? No. I do believe that this quote has some truth, where you will appreciate happiness more once you've experienced pain, but a persons experience with pain does not lessen their ability to be happy, and that is a common misconception that is too often believed.
